Another One Bites The Dust

Continuing a trend that historians have termed the great Granada Hills Grocerypocalypse, Giga Granada Hills has received word that the Albertson's store on the corner of San Fernando Mission and Woodley is slated to be closed some time in February.

Albertsons is closing three other Southern California stores as well, none of which are in Granada Hills, so those aren't the ones you have to worry about.

Albertsons said that the soon-to-be-shuttered locations were underperforming, and said in a press release said that "Albertsons strives to ensure the success of all its stores, however, it is occasionally necessary to close those that are not meeting company goals in today's competitive and difficult economic environment."

  1. This, prices, and the Hows closing is part of the reason why we now do most of our food shopping at Walmart and Costco.

  2. As much as I hate to see any stores close in our neighborhood I will say this Albertson's seemed awfully neglected.

All I hope is that a progressive store like Fresh'n'Easy takes over either this location or How's empty store.

  3. My understanding is that nothing is going in there right away. That's what one of the other shops in the center told me today.
He said Albertsons isn't giving up the space, just closing.
So this may end up being like the old ralps on zelzah.

  4. I heard from a shop owner that Alberson's will be
    Vallarta's or Jon's.

  5. That's a shame. Hopefully they will put a Fresh n' Easy in there, rather than Jons or Vallarta.

  6. I've heard that it's going to be another BevMo.

  7. I shopped at that Albertsons for over 20 years, week after week. It was a pretty basic grocery store and the others in the area didn't have anything better to tempt my business away. Hate to see it go. It seemed as busy as any other store in the area. I am at a loss to decide where to take my business. I like to shop in my immediate neighborhood. I, too, would like to see a Fresh n'Easy take its place to liven up that corner of the valley. Sad to see so many empty store fronts around town.

  8. A Vallarta or a Jons? Oh goody! That ought to bring the value of the neighborhood up.

  10. One reason these stores are closing in the first place is because of people who rather shop at Walmart or Costco for their food! Believe me, when it comes to fresh produce, I will steer clear of Costco! Many a time I have had to throw away a newly purchased tub of "Organic" mixed salad from them, only to find the middle portion all yucky and bad already. You can't tell from the outside because the top and bottom view seemed ok. The same salad tub is ALWAYS FRESH in Albertsons, would last in the fridge at least a week or two. If you value your local grocery shop, STOP going to Costco or Walmart for your food needs. I shop at Costco for Dog food and cat food, Walmart for kids' clothes. But there has to be a line when it comes to expertise in providing food produce that only comes from being a grocer for so many years.

  11. As for Vallarta and Jons, I agree with the others - Please stay away from our neighborhood! Ralphs, Vons and Albertsons provide good enough and even better pricing than those 2 anytime anyway, unless all you want to buy is beef flaps or beef tongue all the time, which is a Jons and Vallarta specialty I suppose. Let us all try to support our long time grocery shops-- Ralphs, vons and Albertsons. After all they are the only ones who cared enough to provide grocery hours for those who are only able to shop after 11pm. You will never see Costco or Walmart extending hours just for grocery shoppers.
