Carnival Prep

Image
Carnies ambled and swore, eager tots escaped from the sandbox to wander among the colorful machines, uniformed De La Salle students gazed with anticipation, and a group of skateboarders near the locked up swimming pool languidly passed a joint and looked on as Petit Park was busily being transformed into an amusement park for this weekend's Spring Carnival. The wait will end on Friday evening at 5:00 p.m. Spring Carnival hours are from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. on Friday, and from 1:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

Interview With The Robe-Wearing Sign-Holding Guy From Liberty Income Tax

Image
Is this a tough job? Tiring? No. Not really. How long are you out here every day? About five hours. It's not too bad. Do you do the sign spinning thing? No, just hold it. Do you ever feel any compunction about the degradation of one of our nation's most resonant symbols? Nah. Can I get your name? I'd rather not. Liberty Tax Service is located on the corner of Chatsworth and Woodley next to Smart & Final.

The Crepe Truck Is Coming!!!

Image
The Crepe'n Around Crepe Truck will be returning to Granada Hills tonight! In what we're hoping may become a regular stop, Crepe'n Around will bring their love, and their lovely crepes to the corner of Chatsworth and Zelzah tonight from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. "It's a family adventure," says Jamey, who, with his wife and sister-in-law, started rolling out their crepe truck just four weeks ago. "My wife wanted to start a sweets truck, but I didn't think there would be enough foot traffic for only sweets. Then we came up with the crepes idea, because we'd lived in France for a while, and with crepes you can do both sweet and lunch and dinner items." The couple lived in France while Jamey's wife Eileen attended Le Cordon Bleu to learn the art of baking, and it was Eileen who created the truck's menu, whose big hit on the savory side has been the maple braised pork crepe with toasted walnuts. "But sometimes the chicken's a hit,...

Comic Book Superhero

Image
If you live 'round these parts and you've got a kid who's hooked on comics, Paul Sager is probably to blame. That's because Paul, who's worked at Continental Comics on Devonshire Street for 21 of the shop's 32 years, says the best part of his job is turning kids on to the joy of comic books. "As I've gotten older -- and god help me it has been over 21 years -- I think what I enjoy the most is the four- and five-year-olds to the twelve-year-olds. When you see them first break into a comic -- and you only get one chance at this, the first time -- their eyes, I swear to god it's like a cartoon. Their eyes widen up like they're gonna pop out of their head, like a Bugs Bunny cartoon. It' s brand new, like an amusement park. There's only one first time." If Paul seems like that goofy, kid-at-heart uncle you love to hang out with at Thanksgiving, it's because he is one, with plans to turn his nieces and nephews on to comics at ...

The Hometown Hottie From My Local Area Is Superior To The Hometown Hottie From Your Local Area

Image
I just received this email today, forwarded from a friend: Please help my friend Mike make his girlfriend famous.... Hello Friends Please take a minute and get on your computer to vote for my girlfriend Kendall for Maxim’s Hometown Hottie. Please just use the link below and it will take you straight to the place to make your vote. Please pass this on to anyone that has a computer and could place a vote. All your college buddies or servicemen overseas. This is a great opportunity for her and we need everyone’s help. Thanks a million Michael http://www.maxim.com/girls/hotties/2010/90099/kendall-woodland-hills-ca.html?position=1&year=2009 I'm afraid I can't do that, Mike. You see, Granada Hills has a Maxim Hometown Hottie in the running, and her name is Valerie, and her GH pedigree means that she is inherently superior to any of those Woodland Hills types, no matter how padded her bra may be. You might say that I'm just posting these pictures to increase the hits to my ...

Granada Hills North and South Neighborhood Councils Vote To Rumble At Midnight

Image
Escalating tensions between the Granada Hills North and South Neighborhood Councils came to a head last night when both councils approved motions to engage in a rumble at midnight tonight. The rumble will occur under the 118 freeway underpass at Chatsworth Street just west of Sepulveda. GHSNC President Dave Beauvais, urging the council to approve the motion, said "They might ask for blades, zip guns. And we've got to be prepared." GHSNC President Dave Beauvais The motion was seconded by Outreach Coordinator Sean "Rocket" Rivas, but the approval was almost derailed by objections from Jerry "Action" Askew, who questioned fellow council members' enthusiastic engagement in the turf battle, urging them instead to "make nice with the NN's." Askew's objections were overridden by a majority of council members, who voted overwhelmingly to "mix." Sue DeVandry of Granada Hills North Neighborhood Council had to overcome similar o...
