Congratulations to Gotta Dance Studio, who created the best ice-cream-themed video in the nation for the Baskin-Robbins Ice Cream & Cake Dance Contest. Baskin-Robbins Facebook page says,

"This video was submitted in tribute to Steve Gebelein, co-owner of Gotta Dance Studio, who passed away in February 2009. More than 60 students participated in an on-stage performance to raise money for Cindy, Steve’s wife and co-owner, along with their six children. The students will use the prize money to repair the studio’s leaking roof. Alli Bivins, a teacher at Gotta Dance Studio, said the best reward was having all the kids get together to film the video and enjoy Baskin-Robbins ice cream cakes."

Cute dancing plus thematically appropriate music plus clever product placement plus worthy cause equals ding ding ding: WINNER!

I watched the other two runner up videos, and honestly, they don't even come close to our home town heroes. Nice work, kids!

Thoughts on Joe's Cafe and cancel culture

On June 1, 2020, the date when people planned to gather in Granada Hills to protest George Floyd's killing, fearful rumors began flying early. The protest was certain to be violent. The claims that it was planned as a "peaceful" protest was certain to be cover for looters. Some started spreading the rumor that "the organizers have cancelled the event," presumably with the hope of making that come true.  I spent that afternoon trying to debunk the myths that seemed designed to suppress the event from happening. Myth debunking has, at times during 2020, seemed like a full-time job for me, starting with my pointless and overmatched efforts to argue with "the pandemic is a liberal hoax" theorists. Starlet Visits Granada Hills!

I typically don't do much reporting on crime stories unless something about them cracks me up (e.g. this one ), but I was excited to learn from The Associated Press that the "Starlet Bandit" just hit one of our local banks. Oooh, I love starlets -- especially when they visit Granada Hills! Judging by her surveillance camera snaps, I can see why this starlet traded casting calls for a life of crime; even full-figured gals have to pay the rent, and Hollywood is a tough town when you're not a size 0. Fortunately, on this side of the hill, she blends right in, and unlike L.A., Granada Hills is having a distinct starlet shortage, so I say, come on over! I only wish we had a local branch of Goldman Sachs she could heist.
