The Granada Hills South Neighborhood Council election is today from 10-4 at Granada Hills Recreation Center, and unlike some in the past, this year's election has, for several positions, more than one candidate to choose from. Which certainly makes things more interesting. It's also worth mentioning: your vote counts. No, really. It really counts. In an election where voter turnout is something like .000000001%, one or two votes actually can make a difference. But you may be saying to yourself, "I have no idea whom to pick, since none of these candidates have television commercials on which I can base my voting decisions!" Well, it's all about elimination. For example, there are 15 candidates vying for positions on the nine-member board, three of which couldn't be bothered to provide statements on the "Get To Know The Candidates" page on GHSNC's website . The County will hold a public outreach meeting to engage trail users and the surrounding communities to solicit ideas for the trail plan.  The intent of the County is to develop a trail plan to guide future trail development and meet needs in the Northwest San Fernando Valley Area. Currently, the study area consists broadly of the unincorporated territory of the County bounded by the Ventura County line on the west, the Santa Susana Mountains (Johnson Motorway Trail, Rim of the Valley Trail, Oat Mountain Motorway Trail, and Weldon Canyon Trail) to the north, Interstate 5 to the east, and Roscoe Boulevard to the south, with provisions for connections to other nearby existing and planned recreational resources.   The overall work effort will include a trail plan and associated California Environmental Quality Act documentation. It's a gusher! According to witnesses, a Target delivery truck clipped a fire hydrant in front of the Balboa Blvd. store this afternoon shortly before 5pm, creating a spectacular, 20 foot tall fountain -- a lovely sight on a hot day. Before any swimsuit erasing kids were able to enjoy the fountain, however, fire crews shut down the street-flooding spray.  Darnit. In other news, if anyone has any openings for truck driver positions, you may be hearing from a new candidate soon.

     Mitch Englander's most recent newsletter contained a listing of public pools in the West San Fernando Valley: Granada Hills Pool on Chatsworth, Northridge Pool on Reseda, Canoga Park Pool on Strathern, and Van Nuys/Sherman Oaks Pool on Huston Street.      But Englander forgot to mention one pool right here in Granada Hills: the Knollwood Pool.     Although it shares a parking lot with Knollwood Country Club, the pool is free and open to the public as it's not operated by the club, but by L.A. County Parks and Recreation.     The pool is one of Granada Hills best-kept secrets -- even many nearby residents don't know it's there for the taking. Lively but uncrowded, in a small, sheltered area with shade and a grass lawn for lounging, you can even take swim lessons here, or just go for a dip -- no membership required. These girls selling lemonade in front of their beautiful craftsman house on Ludlow in Old Town GH had the stylin'est setup EVAH. And when business was slow, they had an acoustic guitar to play. Their grandpa built the stand for them. If this is what summer looks like, sign me up.

The Vietnam War Memorial for students at Granada Hills High has been renovated and will be rededicated in a ceremony Friday, May 25 at 12:30pm, The renovation will add the names of six young men that did not make it onto the high school’s memorial when it was dedicated in the 1970s. Carrie Boutros, who is coordinating this event at Granada Hills Charter High School, is trying to find family members or friends of those honored on the memorial before the rededication.
