It's Thanksgiving Time!

Image
...So why not take a gander at the Giga Granada Hills Thanksgiving Archives? Instead of making me come up with new stuff all the time! Dueling Turkeys! Looking something like a cream puff swan put through a mutagenic process of unchecked cell division, there's not one, but two shops in Granada Hills that are proudly displaying these creatures. The Turkey Of Terror He bristles when anyone comes near, fanning out his feathers aggressively, and turning his blood-red, scaly, alien looking head towards you... For Those About To Decorate, We Salute You. The Santa in a Granada Hills front yard in the photo at left hangs his head in shame and exhaustion.

First the food trucks, and now the cupcakes! Finally, Granada Hillsians will no longer have to make a trek to indulge in gourmet cupcakes -- we've got our own place now. Take that, Beverly Hills Sprinkles! Joeleen Medina was busily preparing for the opening of her shop when I visited her last Thursday. The Cordon Bleu graduate has already been in business in Granada Hills for more than five years, but on an appointment-only basis. Now that Joleen has branched out into a storefront location, sampling her wares isn't just a big, special-occasion commitment anymore; instead of waiting for a wedding or a birthday party, you can stroll in and try a cafe latte cupcake (vanilla cupcake, coffee buttercream, vanilla bean filling with espresso chips), or another specialty flavor like pistachio, tangerine, or pomegranate. Joeleen also offers seasonal flavors like cranberry, pumpkin spice, and egg nog, and at Christmas a buche de noel, or yule log cake. "I'm really ...

How's Is Still Open -- For The Moment

Image
Despite rumors to the contrary, the Granada Hills' How's Market has not been taken over by Fresh 'n' Easy... yet. Pam Fitzgerald, at the How's corporate office in Pasadena, said that the chain is being sold piecemeal: the Torrance location will become a Super A Foods, and the Pasadena location has also been sold to a not-yet-identified buyer. The Malibu and Granada Hills locations are still up for sale, so there's still a little time to enjoy the comforting familiarity of How's. But soon, with the coming Sprouts Farmer's Market at Chatsworth and Zelzah and the impending transition of How's, by this time next year, the Granada Hills supermarket landscape will be a new and exotic place. GHSNC Endorses Granada Hills Charter To Run Valley Region High School #4

Granada Hills South Neighborhood council on Thursday voted to endorse Granada Hills Charter's proposal to run Valley Region High School No. 4, better known to Giga Granada Hills readers as George W. Diddley High. Of nine original applicants, the remainder dropped out or consolidated with what is now the only other applicant, LAUSD's Local District 1. GHSNC member Brad Smith said, "From my point of view, based on GHCHS' track record and the detailed executive summary of their plan for VRHS#4 they have provided to the public, including their very strong fiscal record, GHCHS made a very compelling case. They have a very successful program, and I think the odds are in their favor they will be able to duplicate it at VRHS#4." GHSNC member Julie Carson, who teachers at LAUSD's Rinaldi Adult Center and is that school's UTLA chapter chair, however, was the sole vote in favor of Local District 1's plan. "For me, there’s a larger issue here tha...
